Peace of mind can be a problem, especially when it's marketed in a shiny, pricey box. Throwing money at your computer's security so you can make the scary red light turn green may make you calmer, but it doesn't necessarily secure your computer. As computer security expert Bruce Schneier has pointed out, "You can be secure even though you don't feel secure, and you can feel secure even though you're not really secure." Pros: Problems list gives accurate descriptions of what the product is trying to do "Details" list gives user the right not to accept questionable fixes Encourages users to be more vigilant about regular system maintenan Cons: Certain "vulnerabilities" the system tries to fix are actually security settings Dog slow antivirus is non-comptitive with free alternatives Performance improvements through registry optimization contra-indicated by experienceA senior Microsoft official confirmed on Tuesday that Microsoft's forthcoming OS update will be called Windows 8.1, promising a public preview on June 26. Tami Reller, CMO and CFO of Microsoft's Windows Division, also hinted that Windows 8.1 might see a return of the Start Button, and that it will be released in time for this year's holiday season. The public preview of Windows 8.1 will be made at the start of its Build 2013 developers conference, Reller said, speaking at JP Morgan's Technology, Media & Technology Conference on Tuesday. Windows 8.1 will then be delivered "later in the calendar year," she noted. Reller would not elaborate, except to say that, "We know when the holidays are." The Windows 8.1 update will be released for both Windows 8 and Windows RT. Expands on Earlier Statements In a blog post last week, Reller also gave the 2013 calendar year as the time frame for formal release, but she didn't identify the name of the update, beyond referring to it by its codename, Windows Blue. Also in that blog, Reller gave vague descriptions of the update, maintaining that it will "deliver the latest new innovations across an increasingly broad array of form factors of all sizes, display, battery life and performance, creating new opportunities for our ecosystem."ASUS Eee PC 1008HA-PU1X-Pi battery ASUS ZenBook UX31A battery Asus A32-K52 battery ASUS G51J battery Lenovo ThinkPad L412 battery Dell F287H battery ASUS ZenBook UX31E battery Dell R795X battery The update is also "an opportunity for us to respond to the customer feedback that we've been closely listening to since the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT," she said in last week's blog. Return of the Start Button? Meanwhile, rumors have flown that the update will include a return of the Start Button to Windows. A leak of a build that went out over the Internet in March did not show a Start Button. However, at the JP Morgan conference on Tuesday, Reller dropped what could be a new clue. "It will be easy to get from the Windows Start Screen," Reller said.On Wednesday Western Digital (WD) announced the availability of the My Passport Ultra line of portable hard disk drives (HDD). HP today announced the introduction of two new 'detachable PCs' - devices that HP considers to be both notebook and tablet. The Split x2 is basically a larger version of the first convertible notebook running Windows 8 that HP introduced last year, while the SlateBook x2 is another beast entirely. Unlike all of HP's other notebooks, this machine runs Android, not Windows, which lets HP bring users a machine that can do most of what they might need from a notebook, while offering better battery life, lighter weight - you get the idea.Asus AP21-T91 battery Asus L0690LC battery ASUS U30JC battery ASUS X70L battery Asus A32-K93 battery ASUS P53E battery ASUS G75 battery Asus A53SV battery ASUS V2S-4Q002E battery
